SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT

The disposal of rubber tyres has become a major concern and that concern particularly from June 2006 when the new Government directive came into force banning all rubber waste from landfill.

Jennie Price, Chief Executive the Waste & Resources Action Programme commented; in 2006

‘The construction industry has a great opportunity to improve its sustainability by ensuring projects have a high recycled content. It is about exchanging baseline construction products for alternatives, which make more efficient use of material resources. Products with higher recycled content will make a positive contribution to sustainable consumption and production.’

A recent Government directive stipulates 10% of materials for new build should be from recycled materials.

The quest is to change habits by using new innovations, which are helpful to the environment, as opposed to old methods that drain natural resources. It is imperative for us all that these old habits are changed and new building methods are introduced to stop the use of the earth’s natural resources and to dispose of waste products by methods other than landfill. Ever increasingly it is becoming apparent that this is the way forward for the good of our environment.
